TATTOO GROWTH LAB
Hey, it's Matt.
You had a great consultation. They were excited. You showed them your portfolio, talked through the design, answered every question.
Then... nothing.
No deposit. No reply. Just silence.
This week I'm breaking down why it happens and exactly what to send to fix it.
In today's issue:
Why good consultations still end in ghosting
The real reason clients go cold (it's not what you think)
The 1-message follow-up that converts cold leads into confirmed bookings
How to write it so it doesn't feel pushy

DEEP DIVE
Why Clients Ghost After the Consultation (And the 1-Message Fix)
You're not losing these clients because your work isn't good enough.
You're losing them because of what happens in the 24 hours after they leave.
The excitement fades fast.
They leave your studio pumped. They're already picturing the tattoo.
Then life hits. Their partner asks the price. They check their bank. They see three other artists on Instagram. They tell themselves they'll "think about it."
That window closes fast. Leads not followed up within 24 hours are 60% less likely to book.
Most artists do nothing. No message. No check-in. Just waiting.
Waiting is giving up.
Why artists don't follow up
Following up feels desperate. Like you need them more than they need you.
That thinking is costing you real money.
Artists who follow up consistently aren't the desperate ones. They're the ones with full books. Studios that added a simple follow-up step saw bookings jump from 45% to 78%. Same number of consultations. Nearly double the revenue.
The difference? One message.
Why clients really ghost
They don't ghost because they lost interest.
They ghost because something got in the way and nobody helped them past it.
That something is usually one of these:
Price uncertainty (can I actually afford this right now?)
Commitment anxiety (it's permanent, that's scary)
Distraction (they got busy and forgot)
Decision paralysis (they're comparing you to others)
One short, friendly message is enough to get them off the fence. They were never gone. They just needed a reason to say yes.
The 1-message follow-up
Send it within 24 hours. Not 3 days later. The next day.
Keep it under 100 words. Three parts:
One personal detail from the consultation
Your excitement about the project (real, not salesy)
One clear next step
Here's an example:
Hey [Name], really enjoyed talking through your sleeve idea yesterday. Those botanical references are exactly the direction I love working in. I've still got [date] open if you want to lock it in with a deposit. No pressure, just didn't want it to get claimed before I reached out. Let me know!
Warm. Specific. One action to take. That's all it needs to be.
Why it works
Three things make that message convert.
Personal detail. You referenced something specific. That shows you listened. Personalised messages convert 40 to 50% better than generic ones.
Real scarcity. You mentioned a date that could be claimed. That's not a trick. Your schedule is genuinely limited. It creates urgency without pressure.
The easy out. "No pressure" removes the fear of saying yes. When people don't feel trapped, they're more likely to commit.
What if they still don't reply?
Send one more message. Three to five days later. Even shorter:
Hey [Name], still thinking about the [project]? Happy to answer any questions if something's holding you back.
That's it. Two messages total. Then let it go.
If two friendly messages get no reply, they're not a serious lead. Move on.
Artists who do this consistently convert 60%+ of cold consultations into bookings. Most had written those leads off as gone.
They weren't. They just needed a nudge.
Build the habit, not the hustle
You don't need a CRM. No software. No system.
Set a phone reminder for the morning after every consultation. When it goes off, write something personal and hit send. Two minutes. One message. More bookings.
The consultation isn't the finish line. It's the start of the sale.
Your competition is leaving that sale on the table every single week.
You don't have to.
THAT’S A WRAP
How I can help you get more bookings:
Every tattoo you finish is a chance to get a new client.
But most artists never ask for a review. And without reviews, new clients scroll straight past you on Google.
My QR Code Review Card Designs fix that. Print them, place them at your station, and let clients scan and leave a review in 30 seconds. No awkward asking. Just more 5-star reviews, more visibility, and more bookings.
How did you like today's newsletter?
P.S.
