Why Google Reviews Actually Matter

There are two reasons to care about Google reviews, and both of them directly affect your visibility.

They help you rank higher in local search

Google's algorithm looks at three things when deciding who to show in local results: how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and what they say.

A studio with 40 genuine reviews from the last six months will almost always outrank a studio with 8 reviews from two years ago, even if the work is better.

When someone searches "fine line tattoo artist in [your city]," Google is trying to figure out who the most trusted, most relevant option is.

Reviews are one of the clearest signals it has.

They convert strangers into bookings

Even when someone finds your profile, they still need a reason to reach out. Reviews give them that.

People read them carefully before booking a tattoo artist. They're not just checking the star rating.

They're looking for how clients describe the experience, how clean the studio is, how easy you are to communicate with.

A strong collection of recent, detailed reviews does the selling for you before you ever respond to an enquiry.

Why Most Artists Don't Have Enough Reviews

It's not that clients don't want to leave reviews.

Most happy clients just don't think about it unless you ask.

They get their tattoo, they love it, they go home.

The idea of leaving a review never crosses their mind.

The artists who consistently get reviews are the ones who ask. Every time. That's the whole difference.

How to Actually Get More Reviews

Ask right after the session.

The best time to ask is when the client is still in your chair or walking out the door, buzzing from their new tattoo.

That's when the emotion is highest and the experience is freshest.

Don't wait until the next day. Ask now.

Keep it simple.

Something like:

If you're happy with it, I'd really appreciate a quick Google review. It only takes a minute and it helps me out a lot.

Most people will say yes on the spot.

Make it as easy as possible.

This is the most important part.

The number one reason people don't leave reviews is friction.

They intend to, then forget, then it feels like too much effort to go find your business on Google.

Your job is to remove every obstacle between "I want to leave a review" and "review submitted."

The easiest way to do that is handing every client a card with a QR code after their session.

They scan it, land directly on your review page, and leave a review in under a minute. No searching, no typing, no friction.

It also works for clients who don't do it right away.

Some will leave a review that evening. Some the next day when they're showing off their healed tattoo to a friend.

The card stays in their pocket and reminds them when the moment comes.

Follow up once, carefully.

If a client said they'd leave a review but you haven't seen one come in, one follow-up message is fine.

Send it within 48 hours while the experience is still fresh.

But before you send it, check if the review is already there. Some clients leave reviews quietly without telling you.

Asking again when they already did it is awkward and unnecessary. A quick check of your Google Business Profile takes five seconds.

If there's no review yet, keep your message short. "Hey, just wanted to say thanks again for coming in. If you get a chance, that Google review would mean a lot."

One message. That's it.

A Few Things to Avoid

Don't offer discounts or free touch-ups in exchange for reviews.

Google's policies prohibit incentivized reviews and it can get your listing penalized.

And it seems desperate.

Don't only ask clients you think will leave five stars.

Ask everyone. Selective asking is against Google's guidelines and creates a distorted picture of your business.

Don't ignore the reviews you already have.

Reply to every single one.

A business that responds to reviews signals to Google that the listing is active, and signals to potential clients that you actually care.

Both matter.

The Compound Effect

One review a week adds up to 50 reviews a year.

Two a week and you're at 100.

At that point your Google presence starts doing real work for you.

New clients find you without you lifting a finger.

Your listing outranks studios that have been around longer but never built their review base.

It starts with one conversation after one session.
